After spending Christmas at home with the family, many Italians pack up and go out in the cold with friends for a walk, a traditional walk along the main streets of their cities. The cobblestone streets that were silent the day before come alive with small groups of people, wishing each other well. Traditionally, the walks revolve around the local nativity scene (some even performed live by local citizens!), where people remember Boxing Day and donate to their church.

Beyond the usual walk, however, every Italian city has its own tradition of celebrating Boxing Day. Some organize colorful festivals or religious processions; others focus on donating to local hospitals or charities. In northern Padua in the Veneto region, more than 300 inhabitants each year recall a story about Santo Stefano, while in southern Puglia, the residents of Putignano recall when the saint's relics were temporarily protected in their city with an ancient festival almost entirely in dialect. From north to south though, families and friends will gather for a big midday feast. It is still Italy after all!
