Fukaya green onions started full-scale cultivation as a new crop from around 1890, triggered by the sudden drop of indigo value in the early Meiji era. However, although Fukaya green onions need to be heaped up as they grow, the soil in the Tone River basin is highly viscous and requires physical strength to cultivate, and some homes moved to the southern part of Fukaya city.
