باشگاه فوتبال استقلال ایران که به‌طور خلاصه استقلال ایران، استقلال تهران و استقلال نیز نامیده می‌شود یک باشگاه فوتبال حرفه‌ای در ایران است که در چهارم مهر ۱۳۲۴ در شهر تهران بنیان‌گذاری شد. استقلال تا پیش از انقلاب ایران در ابتدا دوچرخه‌سواران و سپس تاج نام داشت.

استقلال بازی‌های خانگی خود را در ورزشگاه آزادی در غرب تهران انجام می‌دهد. این باشگاه در حال حاضر در لیگ برتر و جام حذفی ایران شرکت می‌کند و کهن‌ترین تیم هر دوی این جام‌ها است. رقبای اصلی استقلال در این دو جام تیم‌های پرسپولیس از تهران و سپاهان و ذوب آهن از اصفهان هستند. استقلال با هشت قهرمانی در لیگ‌های فوتبال ایران،دومین تیم پرافتخار لیگ‌های سراسری ایران و با هفت قهرمانی پرافتخارترین تیم جام حذفی ایران است.

این باشگاه تا پیش از برگزاری رقابت‌های سراسری فوتبال در ایران در دهه ۱۳۵۰ خورشیدی و سپس‌تر در زمان جنگ ایران و عراق در دهه ۱۳۶۰، در جام‌های استان تهران، جام باشگاه‌ها و جام حذفی تهران بازی می‌کرد. رقبای اصلی باشگاه در آن جام‌ها در ابتدا تیم‌های شاهین و دارایی و بعدتر تیم‌های پاس و پرسپولیس بودند. این باشگاه با چهارده قهرمانی در جام باشگاه‌های تهران پرافتخارترین تیم این جام و با چهار قهرمانی در جام حذفی باشگاه‌های تهران دومین تیم پر افتخار این جام محسوب می‌شود. یک قهرمانی در سوپر جام تهران ۱۳۷۳ دیگر قهرمانی استانی این باشگاه است و در مجموع استقلال با نوزده قهرمانی پرافتخارترین تیم جام‌های استان تهران است.

استقلال در ده فصل اخیر هشت بار جواز حضور در لیگ قهرمانان آسیا را کسب کرده‌است. این باشگاه با دو قهرمانی در جام باشگاه‌های آسیا (مسابقات باشگاهی قهرمانی آسیا ۱۹۷۰ و جام باشگاه‌های آسیا ۹۱–۱۹۹۰) و دو نائب قهرمانی (جام باشگاه‌های آسیا ۹۲–۱۹۹۱ و جام باشگاه‌های آسیا ۹۹–۱۹۹۸) و دو مقام سومی (مسابقات باشگاهی قهرمانی آسیا ۱۹۷۱ و جام باشگاه‌های آسیا ۰۲–۲۰۰۱) پُرافتخارترین باشگاه فوتبال ایران در رقابت‌های آسیایی و سومین باشگاه پرافتخار قاره آسیا است. فدراسیون بین‌المللی تاریخ و آمار فوتبال این باشگاه را پس از الهلال عربستان و یوکوهاما مارینوس ژاپن، سومین باشگاه برتر فوتبال آسیا در قرن بیستم اعلام کرده‌است.

استقلال از پرطرفدارترین تیم‌های ایران است و در رقابت‌های لیگ برتر ایران و لیگ قهرمانان آسیا بازی‌های خانگی این تیم معمولاً در میان بازی‌های پر تماشاگر فصل هستند و در فصول اخیر این مسابقات استقلال بارها رکورد میانگین بیشترین تماشاگران بازی‌های خانگی را به خود اختصاص داده‌است. رکورد پرتماشاگرترین بازی جام باشگاه‌های آسیا و لیگ برتر ایران تا پایان ۲۰۱۹ نیز در اختیار استقلال است.

پرویز خسروانی از مؤسسان نخستین باشگاه و مالک آن تا پیش از انقلاب بود و بعد از انقلاب در حالی که در ابتدا سعی بر مصادره یا انحلال این باشگاه توسط گروه‌های سیاسی مختلف بود، در نهایت با تلاش عنایت‌الله آتشی نماینده سازمان تربیت بدنی دولت وقت در امور مربوط به سازمان ورزشی و فرهنگی تاج و تعدادی از بازیکنان پیشین و آن زمان استقلال به ویژه منصور پورحیدری، این باشگاه با تغییر نام و نشان‌واره از انحلال نجات یافت و به صورت رسمی تحت مالکیت سازمان تربیت بدنی درآمد هرچند که در این راه تمامی دارایی‌های خود را از دست داد. با انحلال سازمان تربیت بدنی در ۱۳۸۹ و تأسیس وزارت ورزش و جوانان، مالکیت این باشگاه نیز به این وزارت‌خانه رسید. برند باشگاه استقلال نیز در ۱۳۹۲ و در دهمین جشنواره ملی قهرمانان صنعت ایران به عنوان یکی از ۱۰۰ برند برتر ایران شناخته شد.
