Atlético Nacional is a soccer club in the city of Medellín, capital of the department of Antioquia, Colombia. It is considered one of the most popular clubs in Colombia and South America. Founded on March 7, 1947 under the name of Club Atlético Municipal de Medellín and registered by public deed on April 30, 1947 in the first notary of Medellín. In 1950, the former president of the Antioquia Soccer League, Luis Alberto Villegas, changed the club's name to Club Atlético Nacional. The club participates in the highest category of the Major Division of Colombian Soccer, the First Category A since its foundation in 1948.
It is the most successful team in Colombian soccer with 29 official titles between national and international championships and for this reason it is popularly known as the King of Cups. At the national level, it is the club with the most championships won in the Primera A with 16, the most champion of the Colombia Cup with four titles and at the same time two-time Super League champion. At the international level it has achieved 7 titles, it is one of the only two Colombian teams to be crowned champion of the Copa Libertadores, along with Once Caldas, and with two cups it is the only one to achieve it more than once; It is also the club that won the most titles in the Merconorte Cup with 2; he was also champion of the Inter-American Cup twice and of the Recopa Sudamericana once. The club has played its home games since 1953 at the Atanasio Girardot stadium, its sports headquarters is located in the municipality of Guarne, east of the Aburrá Valley and its administrative headquarters in the municipality of Itagüí. He disputes the Classic Paisa against Independiente Medellín, in addition to having strong rivalries against América de Cali and Millonarios.
