That is not to make it sound cheap, it is not. The idea is that there is a vital force that created the universe, us and all the things in it. It is not a person but an energy field. You invoke the energy field your way. Buddha was not a God, he only knew how to talk to that energy field in an awake way. His followers have used their methods to be happy in life and found them inspiring.
