Hatsune Miku (Japanese: 初 音 ミ ク), sometimes called Miku Hatsune, is a Vocaloid software voicebank developed by Crypton Future Media and her official moe anthropomorph, a 16 year old girl with long turquoise twintails. He uses Yamaha Company's Vocaloid 2, Vocaloid 3, and Vocaloid 4 singing synthesis technology. He also uses Crypton Future Media's Piapro Studio, a VSTi synthesizer plugin for singing. He is the second Vocaloid sold using the Vocaloid 2 engine and the first Japanese Vocaloid to use the Japanese version of the Vocaloid 2 engine. His voice is modeled after Japanese voice actor Saki Fujita. The personification of Miku has been marketed as a virtual idol and has appeared at concerts on stage as an animated projection (projection of the rear cast on a special coated glass screen).

The character's name comes from combining the Japanese words for first (初, hatsu), sound (音, ne), and future (ミ ク, miku [n 1]), thus meaning "the first sound of the future", referring to his position as the first of Crypton's "Vocal Character Series".
