Piuro

Piuro is a beautiful village, which could very well be compared to a town for its architectural palaces, for its bell towers, churches and other buildings [...]. Its name derives from the Latin word "plorare", meaning to cry, because of a tearful disaster that happened there in ancient times. "(Johann Guler von Wyneck, 1616). Two years later, a second landslide completely erased Piuro, known as the Pompeii of the Alps. This catastrophe crystallized the memory of the ancient and very rich village, a crossroads of trade and a compulsory place of transit for those who passed from Italy to northern Europe. The memory of Piuro is still alive in the countries of central Europe and there are numerous initiatives promoted by the Municipality of Piuro and by associations operating in the area aimed at rediscovering the origins and contacts that made the little Piuro great.
 
Piuro is located in the Val Bregaglia, a branch that is half Swiss and half Italian of the Valchiavenna and current province of Sondrio. The piurasks are a little less than two thousand and live mainly in the three largest hamlets, Prosto, Borgonuovo and Santa Croce, flanked by other small half-coast villages, inhabited up to five years ago and rediscovered by some young people a few years ago.
It is necessary to pass through Piuro to reach the passes of Maloja, Julier and Septimer, formerly one of the main direct passages between northern Europe and Italy. It has always been a strategic place of transit and union between Europe and Italy.
 From here passed Leonardo Da Vinci, who thus described the Cascades of the Acquafraggia "Up to said river (la Mera) is found water chadute of 400 arms which make lookout ..." (1495). Today they are recognized as a Natural Monument of the Lombardy Region. To enhance this place, a symbol of the entire municipal territory, since 2015 thanks to the contribution of the Lombardy Region within the District of Commerce and Activity, the NOTTE ROSA AL CASCATE is organized, just one of the events designed to showcase the many goodies that PIURO reserves and which includes an intact natural heritage and local gastronomy rich in unique typical dishes.
