The first step in becoming a pilot is deciding what type of flight you will take, which will determine what level of pilot license you will need. There are 4 basic types of pilot licenses:

Recreational pilot: Permits: a pilot to fly with friends and family on board, but only within the country of issue.

Private Pilot: Fly only with friends and family on board, but is valid worldwide.

Commercial pilot: allows the holder to fly large jet planes commercially, but not as a captain.

Airline Transport Pilot - Allows the licensee to fly aircraft for a living anywhere in the world and includes certification to fly aircraft as a captain.

Multi-engine classification: the owner is licensed to fly an airplane with more than one engine.

Classification of the instrument: The holder is licensed to fly at night, in clouds and in bad weather.

Instructor Qualification - The licensee is licensed to teach others how to fly.
The requirements for pilot licenses include having an excellent command of written and spoken English, the language used universally throughout the world by airport controllers and support personnel.

All potential pilots must complete ground school, which is basically classroom education, followed by flight training to obtain a pilot's license.

Before flying alone on any type of aircraft, a medical certification is required. Medical certificates are designated as first class, second class, or third class. First class is required for airline transport pilots, second class for commercial pilots, and third class for student, recreational, and private pilots.

The minimum age limitations imposed on anyone who wants to learn to fly are 15 years. The minimum age for flight training or for flying alone is 16. The minimum age to qualify for a Private Pilot License is 17 years old.

Learning to be a pilot is time consuming and expensive, but the rewards are excellent. There is no other recreation or race as exciting as flying an airplane.
