La Venta de Vargas

Es lugar obligado donde recalan todos aquellos que, venidos de fuera, desean conocer San Fernando en sus aspectos culinarios más típicos y genuinos, así como en sus curiosidades y esencias dado que la Venta de Vargas es un lugar que, lejos de todas sofisticación, alberga entre sus muros, sus cerámicas y medios puntos, auténtico sabor isleño... y para los de casa, es el rincón, entre peroles, mandiles, bandejas y sonrisas se hace cañaillismo.

En 1959, en la Venta, la Niña de los Peines y Manolo Caracol, escuchan cantar a Camarón con tan sólo 8 años. Fue aquí donde Camarón fraguó sus primeros años cantaores escuchando a Caracol a su hermano Manuel, al Niño de la Calzá y a la dueña, María Picardo. De aquellos momentos y de muchos otros, se conservan multitud de fotografías en la venta, que además de negocio de comidas, puede ser considerada sin temor a la exageración como un auténtico museo de arte flamenco. 

Esta venta se fundó en el año 1924, entonces se denominaba “Venta Eritaña” y funciona con el nombre de Venta de Vargas desde el año 1935. Con este nombre, en honor a su fundador Don Juan Vargas, adquirió fama y prestigio a través de los años. Tras él, Dña María, su mujer, supo darle a La Venta ese carácter tradicional y añejo, - con duende incluido- y pasarle el relevo a sus sobrinos José y Lolo Picado, que haciendo bueno el lema de que aquí nadie es extraño”, han dado continuidad a ese talante y al sentido gastronómico, del más puro estilo andaluz” 

En la plaza que hay frente a la venta se podrá contemplar el monumento que la ciudad le rinde a un hijo predilecto.
