تار از سازهای زهی مضرابی (زخمه ای) است که در ساخت آن از چوب، پوست، استخوان، زه و فلز استفاده می‌شود. کاسه طنينی تار از چوب یک تکه در دو قسمت است: کاسه ( قسمت بزرگتر) و نقاره ( قسمت کوچکتر). قسمت روی دهانه را پوست می‌کشند و خرک بر روی پوست کاسه قرار می‌گيرد. جنس کاسه از چوب توت و دسته معمولا از گردو ساخته می‌شود.
