Summary :
On January 1, 1853, the servants of the Hôtel de Sanglie in Paris saw the Duchess Mlle Germaine, ill and whose father was ruined, going to sell her ring at the pawnshop. Madame de Chermidy makes him marry Don Diego for the money. They go to Italy where Germaine recovers her health. They adopt Gomez, son of Madame de Chermidy. Germaine is poisoned and Madame de Chermidy wants to marry Don Diego but Germaine escapes and Madame de Chermidy is killed by a servant of Germaine. They return to France.
