The festivities in honor of the Lord of Luren, consist of a massive religious manifestation from Ica. In Ica, as in Lima, the month of October is a month of devotion and fervor for the inhabitants who profess the Catholic religion. Every third Monday in October, from seven o'clock at night, when the desert heat begins to subside, the massive procession of the Lord of Luren, patron of the city of Ica, begins.

Thousands of faithful, coming from everywhere, accompany the image that travels, for more than fifteen hours, the streets of the city. The Ica people build arches and flower carpets for him and sing happily as he passes. There is emotion but, above all, humility and faith. For the historian Arturo Jiménez Borja, this is a collected, respectful procession, illuminated by infinite candles carried by the hands of his devoted followers.

The Lord of Luren, crucified on the wood of a great cross, raises the majesty of his dark presence over the human sea that surrounds him. Arid face, body, hands and feet are from Ica. From the high throne of his walk, simple but beautiful, he contemplates his people and answers them with a long and deep look. This is the Lord of the desert.

The history of the Lord of Luren dates back to that of the Spanish conquest of this part of Peru. It is said that his name is derived from the Quechua word Hurin, which means "low", alluding to the lower part of the Ica Valley, where the cult of his image began. Tradition has it that Nicolás de Rivera "El Viejo", so called because he was forty years old at the beginning of the conquest of Peru, was commissioned by Francisco Pizarro to found the capital of the new colony somewhere to the south of Lima, because the valley of the Lurín river seemed very narrow and populated to him. Rivera found a suitable place where the current city of Pisco stands, seven leagues from the sea, in the place known as San Gallán. It was precisely there that Rivera received the news of Pizarro's death at the hands of the almagristas, in 1541.

On May 13, 1556, Nicolás de Rivera, settled in the valley, which he had already endowed with a hermitage and several shops, decided to found the San Nicolás de Luren hospital for needy Indians. Shortly after, in 1558, when making his will, he endowed the place with sufficient income and indicated its organization. They say that in this act there was a kind of moral debt, obliged by his conscience, and by the voice of Father Bartolomé de las Casas, to restore what was wrong and to repair the damage caused to the Incas in the region. | "For having committed some excesses, both in mistreating said Indians and in having taken some things from them improperly or having collected or received tributes from them that are too many and out of what honestly and well ..." | Part of the Testament of Nicolás de Rivera the Old | The fact is that there existed, in the hermitage built by Rivera in Ica, a crucified, small and deteriorated Christ. This motivated the need to have a more dignified image, so, after some negotiations, the people of Ica managed to get the Convento Grande de San Francisco de Lima to order Spain to carve an image of Christ on the cross.
