Tipe-X dibentuk pada tanggal 10 September 1995 (dengan nama Head Master). Saat ini Tipe-X terdiri dari 6 personel yaitu Tresno Riadi (vokal), Micky (bass), Yoss (gitar), Arie Hardjo (drum), Billy (gitar), dan Anto (trombone).
Tipe-X dibentuk pada September tahun 1995, semula kelompok ini menggunakan nama Headmaster sebagai nama band, namun mereka akhirnya memilih nama tipe-X karena untuk memudahkan orang mengingat. Grup ini beranggotakan Tresno (Vokal), Micky (Bass), Yoss (Gitar), Billy (Gitar), Arie (Drum) dan Anto (Trombone). Semula mereka memainkan lagu - lagu grup luar seperti Voodoo Glow Skull, Operation Ivy & mighty-mighty bosstone, namun akhirnya mereka mengganti dengan membawakan lagu-lagu ciptaan mereka sendiri.

Festival - festival musik hingga panggung - panggung underground di Jakarta & sekitarnya mereka jajal, Mereka juga pernah menjadi salah satu juara favorit Festival Musik Alternatif di Menteng tahun 1995. Mereka akhirnya membuat beberapa demo lagu, lalu tipe-X berinisiatif mengirimkan demo lagu `Frustasi` ke acara Ekspresi Indosiar dan ditayangkan. Mereka juga mengirimkan demo lagu Bebas Pusing ke acara IndieLapan radio Prambors dan masuk peringkat lima. Setelah itu tawaran manggung pun semakin banyak.
Ketika lagu - lagu ciptaan mereka sudah terekam sekitar 10 lagu, tipe-X pun mulai mencoba memasukkan demo lagu ke major label. Mereka ingin menawarkan konsep SKA versi tipe-X dan rencananya jika tidak diterima, mereka akan menempuh jalan Indie Label. Mereka tidak menyangka musik tipe-X akhirnya tembus juga ke industri rekaman pada awal akhir dekade 90an.

Untuk memperbaiki kualitas debut album tipe-X mengaransemen kembali beberapa lagu - lagu yang pernah mereka bikin, semula mereka menjagokan lagu Frustasi dan Bebas Pusing, ternyata Pops selaku produser lebih memilih lagu Genit yang justru dibikin secara mendadak. Debut album tipe-X berjudul "SKA Phobia" akhirnya Rilis pada bulan Juni 1999 dan beredar dipasaran lewat label rekaman Pops Musik di bawah Aquarius Musikindo selaku distributor. Hingga saat ini tipe-x telah mengeluarkan 6 album, diantaranya: Ska Phobia 1999, Mereka Tak Pernah Mengerti 2001, Super Suprise 2003, Discography Hitam Putih 2005, Album the best A Journey 2007, dan Festival Perasaan 2009 di bawah naungan Michelin Records.

Type-X was formed in September 1995, initially the group used the name Headmaster as the name of the band, but they finally chose the name type-X because it was to make it easier for people to remember.
