Faiz Ahmad Faiz MBE NI was a Pakistani poet, and author of Urdu and Punjabi literature. Faiz was one of the most celebrated Pakistani Urdu writers of his time. He studied philosophy and English literature in Lahore and finished an M.A. in Arabic. Naqsh-e-Fariyaadi (The supplicant's portrait), his first collection of poems, was published in 1941. All his collections are small, and even they contain some unfinished poems. Faiz was the first Asian poet to receive the Lenin Peace Prize, awarded by the Soviet Union in 1962. In 1976 he was awarded the Lotus Prize for Literature. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize shortly before his death in 1984.
