While most economy Ford Mustang LXs had the 88 hp 2.3-liter engine, Ford built a low-profile LX 5.0 that combined the 225 hp (205 hp after 1988) V-8 with an LX-like appearance. When the first Ford Mustang debuted in 1964, Ford's fanciest engine was the 271-horsepower K-code 289 Hi-Po. This naturally aspirated four-cylinder remained Ford Mustang's first standard engine until 1982, but by 1979 things had improved, and the mighty Mustang had the model's first turbocharged engine ever. Although marked by horses, the first Ford Mustang was named after a World War II fighter jet, and Ford sold over 400,000 vehicles in its first year, leaving other automakers scrambling to compete.

The 1965 Mustang ushered in a new vehicle type called the pony car. The Ford Mustang debuted in April 1964 as a sporty and youthful vehicle based on inexpensive machinery from the Ford Falcon subcompact. The 1965 Mustang was designed to be an affordable high-performance car, and Ford has tried to keep prices low throughout its history, even if that meant keeping older technologies like the active rear axle. From 1964 to 2004, the Ford Mustang shared a chassis with other Ford lineups, remaining rear-wheel drive throughout production. The original two-seat 1962 Ford Mustang I concept car evolved into the four-seat 1963 Mustang II concept car, which Ford used to show how interested the public would be in the first production Mustang. Henry Ford II chose the Universal Exhibition as the venue to introduce the Mustang to consumers. Thus, Ford's marketing department decided that the Mustang was not just a car but a brand that had its history for the Mustang.

The mid-to-late 1970s Ford Mustang isn't exactly a collector's magnet, but if you're looking for one of these cars, be aware that they had complex emissions systems that made tuning engines difficult. After debuting in 1964, Ford commissioned Holman & Moody to "prepare a 10,427 cubic inch Mustang V8" in the NHRA Factory/Experimental class for the 1965 season. It uses chassis and suspension configurations similar to the GT350 and GT500. With a supercharged V8 producing 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, the Ford GT500 has been dubbed the new Shelby Mustang GT500, the most excellent Ford Mustang ever built's hard to argue with that.
