A glimpse of the Book of Al-Hikam by Ibn Atho'illah Assakandary

The Al-Hikam is the work of Sheikh Ibn Atha'illah, the third murshid of Tariqah Syadziliyah. The first founder of Shadziliyah was Sheikh Abu Hasan Ali Asy-Syadzili, a Moroccan who later settled in Alexandria, Egypt and died in 1258 AD His successor was Sheikh Abu Abbas Al-Mursi, who came from Murcia, Andalusia, Spain (died in 1287 M), which after his death was continued by Sheikh Ibn Atha'illah.

The book which consists of 264 messages of virtue delivered by Ibn Athaillah is touted as the magnum opus. The pattern of writing is simple, i.e. it consists only of sentences with short editions which are very short. This is the reason why this book invites the interest and attention of scholars to outline the intentions and thoughts of the character.

Al-Hikam is one of the monumental literary works and is the result of Ibn Atha'illah's deep reflection on two main sources of Islam; al-Qur'an and as-Sunnah.

One of his reflections as a closing of this reviewer:

"My Lord, remove me from my modesty and cleanse me from doubt and shirk before entering my grave. Only to you I ask for help then help me. To you I surrender, so do not weigh my burden. I beg you, don't disappoint you. In Your grace I hope you refuse. I approach you, so don't stay away from you. At your door I stand, then don't cast me out. "

Kitab Al-Hikam is the core (core) of Sufism that presents pearls of wisdom for its readers. Mainly in understanding the relationship between human beings as slaves and Allah SWT as God who is entitled to worship. How many people who do charity (worship) feel that with the worship they do, they can get merit and even claim merit to Allah. Furthermore, they even believe that they will be able to survive in the hereafter because of the rewards that Allah must give for their actions while on earth. People who are like this demand that God is obliged to do justice in the hereafter. In fact, who is able to face the justice of God who is all-knowing of all deeds, even as much as pilgrimage?

This attitude will bring someone not to recognize and hope for God's grace, because he always calculates every act and reward

Al-Hikam is seen as a heavyweight book not only because of its high literary sentence structure, but also the depth of the makrifat which is spoken through its short sentences. It becomes a book whose language is extraordinarily beautiful — words and meanings support one another, giving birth to thrilling expressions.
