Guía Turística de Écija

Écija, declarada Conjunto Histórico Artístico en 1966, es una bella ciudad de pasado señorial dominada por grandiosas torres y cúpulas barrocas. Once torres que invitan a pasear por sus calles y descubrir una de las ciudades más bellas de Andalucía.
En su pasado romano, Astigi fue una de las cuatro capitales de la Bética. Su situación privilegiada junto al río Genil, la convirtió en siglo III d.C. en la principal exportadora de aceite de oliva a todo el Imperio Romano.
Durante el Emirato y el Califato de Córdoba, la entonces denominada Medina Estiggia siguió siendo capital de provincia y una de las ciudades principales de Al-Andalus.
Con la conquista cristiana de la mano de Fernando III, que la incorporó en 1240 al Reino de Castilla, el reparto de la tierra entre familias nobiliarias y órdenes militares se convirtieron en sus señas de identidad. Los grandes señores y nobles se enriquecieron sobremanera con la floreciente economía agraria y artesanal, una prosperidad que llevó aparejada la construcción de grandes palacios y edificios religiosos, de cuya visión se sigue disfrutando en la actualidad.

In its Roman past, Astigi was one of the four capitals of Andalusia. Its privileged location by the river Genil, the third century A.D. became the exporter of olive oil throughout the Roman Empire.
